“If everything you do needs to work on a three-year time horizon, then you’re competing against a lot of people. But if you’re willing to invest on a seven-year time horizon, you’re now competing against a fraction of those people… Just by lengthening the time horizon, you can engage in endeavors that you could never otherwise pursue” Jeff Bezos

Translation: Use time to your advantage. Stop getting caught up in the day to day noise and instant gratification culture. Take a step back, think, and focus on the long term.

Compounding Crazy [Post]

  • Recap: A 'Not Boring' post that highlights how human knowledge and technological progress compound -- 'we build new things on the shoulders of giants at a faster and faster pace, and our brains are not good at understanding all of that in the moment.' He then ties this fundamental progress back to valuations and investing - 'market caps of all of the world’s publicly listed companies have grown from $1.138 trillion in 1975 to $117 trillion today.'

  • CommentIf it feels like things are changing quickly, it's because they are -- the rate of change of progress is accelerating. Human brains are wired to think linearly, so this exponential shift is tough to comprehendFundamental progress is one thing (unlocking potential and 'trapped' value), valuations are another. There is certainly a lot of value being created/unlocked, but this is also happening alongside trillions of fiat dollars being printed (i.e. fiat being devalued) to prop up a broken global system (since 1971). Net net, there are a lot of crosscurrents out there -- it's always important to understand where technological progress is (proof of concept? commercialization?) and what's being baked in (valuation, cash flows, etc.). It won’t be a straight line, but the future is bright.

Blockchains are the new app stores [Tweet]

  • Recap: Just like mobile applications were built on app stores over the past decade, the next decade will see the proliferation of applications built on blockchains (like Ethereum) - "programmable blockchains are the next computing frontier, as PCs were in the 80s, internet in the 90s, and mobile in the last decade."

  • Comment: From NFTs, to DAOs, to social tokens,  we've already started to see these initial applications get built out. This thread provides a useful overview that takes a 'step back' and compares blockchain to previous technological innovations. Blockchain is the base tech for web3 that allows for decentralization -- removing middlemen and turning networks into economies.

Technology

OpenAI Codex Live Demo [Video]

  • Recap: Incredible live demo of OpenAI's Codex, which is an AI system that translates natural language (i.e. you typing/saying whatever you want) into executable code (i.e. python script that runs an application). We're getting closer to enabling non-programmers to write programs, and eventually software writing software... the productivity leaps will be substantial.

  • Comment: Tying into the above 'technological compounding,' this live demo is truly amazing. We're big sci-fi readers (happy to share a book list) - Kurzweil's, Cline's, et al. worlds are turning into a reality sooner than people thinkMust watch
